GeoTargeting your Ads through OpenX

You can optimize your advertising by being discriminate about which ads are disbursed to users. Open X Ad Sever 2.8 provides an easy way to define criteria for when certain ads are served. OpenX 2.8 provides a plugin architecture that supports the development of 3rd party modules. This allows the extension of the open source Ad Server without impacting it directly. The Quova plugIn for OpenX impacts the delivery options directly. Once installed you can define delivery constraints for your ads based on the user location and connection information provided by Quova's IP based geolocation. The IP based information can be obtained directly from Quova's On Demand or On Premise GeoDirectory ipinfo service.

Installation

Download the quovaGeotargetingAPI.zip file and save it e.g. on the Desktop, then follow the instructions here: http://www.adserverplugins.com/openx/how-to-install-a-plugin-in-openx-ad-server . Note that the OpenX service has a very basic GeoTargeting module installed by default. Installing the Quova plugIn disables the existing GeoTargeting module and replaces all but the Continent and Country reference data.

Configuration

You must configure OpenX after installation in order to gain access to the Quova data. For hosted Developer or On Demand services you must provide your credentials. If you are accessing the the data through a GeoDirectory server you must update the URL to have the correct endpoint. As administrator update the credentials:

  1. Click on the Plugins tab
  2. Click on the Details link for the Plugin
  3. Click on the Settings link for the component
  4. Fill in the API Key and API Secret fields

Developer and On Demand Hosted Services
You can try the Quova service by signing up through the Developer portal, http://developer.quova.com . Use the credentials given to you after registering on the developer site and creating a key for your application.

On Premise GeoDirectory
If you're using a local installation of the GeoDirectory Server of the Quova application, leave the Key and Secret fields blank and adjust the API URL field accordingly.

Usage

Once installed and properly configured the newly installed geotargeting plugin allows access to most of the existing delivery limitation and adds new ones specifically developed for the data returned to the Quova API.

  1. Navigate to the properties screen of any banner in your system
  2. Click on the Delivery Options tab
  3. Pick a limitation from the dropdown menu (e.g. Geo - Country) and click the Add button
  4. Select the operator (is any / is not any)
  5. Click on one or more entries in the country list
  6. Add another limitation or click Save Changes

The basic Geo- limitations you have defined under other data providers may work under the Quova GeoTargeting plugIn. That may include: continent, country, city, area code, DMA, zip code, latitude/longitude. It is however recommended that you check to verify compatibility for naming conventions as they will fail when looking for exact matches against the data provided by the Quova ipinfo service request. Note that the Region limitation should be reviewed since it has been shown to provide the most number of incompatibilities among the field with other data providers. Also there is now the ability to provide State level limitations. For more information about the Quova ipinfo service visit the Developer portal, http://developer.quova.com. Subscription and enterprise customers have access to additional Reference data information through QuovaNet. Contact your Quova Solutions engineer at support@quova.com if you do not have credentials to QuovaNet or for more information.
